Studies indicate that excessive ambient noise beyond 115 decibels may detrimentally impact the health of the developing fetus, while sustained exposure to decibel levels above 85 may result in hearing loss to the average adult. Cocoon is an ambient noise tracker that aims to raise awareness about this issue by empowering pregnant women, particularly those in noisy, urban environments, to protect their developing babies from the harmful effects of sound. A dual Android Wear and mobile phone application, Cocoon features a real-time noise monitor which provides annotations to help users develop an intuition for what constitutes harmful sound levels. Cocoon also recommends safer, quieter locations to mothers in dangerously loud environments. The app allows users to view graphical visualizations of sound levels they have encountered, as well as offers information and resources for concerned mothers to keep themselves informed.
